Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Advocacy groups, particularly civil society organizations (CSOs), play a vital role in shaping political discourse and enhancing democratic representation. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, CSOs have been instrumental in raising awareness about governance issues, including political representation, human rights, and transparency. These groups provide a platform for marginalized communities to voice their concerns and push for greater political inclusion. By organizing campaigns, lobbying government officials, and mobilizing citizens, advocacy groups contribute significantly to increasing political awareness and improving the representation of various social groups in governance (Ajao, 2023). This study seeks to explore the role of advocacy groups in Makurdi LGA, particularly how these organizations influence political representation through their activities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant work done by advocacy groups, political representation in Makurdi LGA remains skewed, with certain groups still underrepresented in the political process. While civil society organizations continue to advocate for improved representation, challenges such as political apathy, institutional resistance, and lack of awareness about advocacy efforts persist. This study aims to investigate how advocacy groups have worked to enhance political representation and the extent of their success in addressing the barriers to inclusive governance.
